basnishing fast food, and new camera fun!

I know I said I wasn't going to do this.  But it has to be done.

The first "no-no" of my eating plan:  FAST FOOD.

It is officially banished.

It makes me tired, and sick, and I don't want to do that to my body anymore.  Yet somehow, I can't stop myself from morning biscuits at McDonalds.  So, this is what it has come to.  I will walk across the street if I see one.  I will give the sign the finger as I drive by.  I will treat fast food as if it were an ex-boyfriend who cheated.

I will no longer visit any "restaurant" with a drive through window (Daiquiri shop excluded, because seriously… who doesn't love running through that drive through on the way home on Friday?).

-----------------

In other news, I bought a new camera last night as well.  A Kodak M1033.  It doesn't take pictures as sharp as my Nikon D40, nor does it have as many options to change settings, but it's tiny, fits in my purse, and will be a heck of a lot nicer to travel with than a giant dSLR.

Also, I got a FANTASTIC deal on the camera.  I saw it at Target first for $159.99, and kind of fell in love, but I told Boyfriend that I wouldn't spend more than 150, and with tax, that would put me WAY over.  So we went to dinner, and stopped at a best buy on the way home.  They had ONE left, the display model, and were selling it for $109.99.  Here's the catch though, they lost all of the accessories (cords, software, etc.).  The girl offered it for $99.99 and I decided at that price, I can FIND a way to charge the battery.

The USB cable is something proprietary to Kodak, and I'm having trouble finding it, however, as long as I can find a way to charge the battery (a Li ION) I'll be set, because I can transfer the pictures via the card reader on my laptop.

So, wish me luck when I go to radio shack tonight.  I might just need it.

I did something bad today.

I had Taco Bell.

Which reminded me exactly why I stopped eating at Taco Bell in the first place. Ugh. It doesn't even taste that good, and it makes me feel like crap.

At any rate, I probably wont eat any fast food for the next 2 or 3 months, so, that's good.

Tomorrow is my day off, so my plan is to sleep in, relax, then meet Muscles at the gym for a workout and then have artichokes for dinner (YUMMM!).

Weight Loss Plan 2k9

So, I wanted to talk about dieting and exercise today.  People who have met can attest to the fact that I am on the hefty side.  I've never been too concerned with this, even though it has bothered me.  Well, Something happened recently, and it wasn't an event or number on the scale that did it, but suddenly, something inside me clicked:  I have to get healthy, if not for my own sake, for the sake of my unborn children.

Almost 5 years ago, I was diagnosed with something called PCOS: Poly-cystic Ovarian Syndrome.  Basically, it's the reason I'm fat.  What happens is that my testosterone/estrogen levels are out of whack, along with certain metabolic and hormonal pathways in the digestive system, causing me to eat and gain weight like a man would.  This in turn causes problems with my insulin levels to get worse, and exacerbates the problem.  And then goes in a cycle from there.  There is no "cure" for PCOS, only treatments.  The most recommended treatment is weight loss.  However because of the symptoms, weight loss is difficult.  I'm constantly tired, and hungry because of the excess insulin in my system.  When I got my diagnosis, I used it as an excuse: "I'm fat for medical reasons, and so, that makes it okay, and I don't have to loose weight"

For many years, I was also Bulimic.  I would go to lunch at school and eat as much as i could fit in my face, and quietly visit the restroom before heading back to class.  Eventually, I was able to stop purging, but not binging.  And I used that as an excuse "oh, it's mental, I'm sick in my head, so it's okay for me to be fat"

There was even a time when I justified it by thinking that it would make heartbreak less likely because fewer men would be interested in me.  Well, guess what.  I still got my heart broken, probably even more than I would have with a smaller dress size.  Boys would be interested in me just fine, but they didn't want to be seen with me, or they'd cut me off with "you're a great girl, but I'd rather be friends".

It's time to stop making excuses, and start living my life.  PCOS is the leading cause of infertillity, and the only way I can have children one day, is to lose weight, and get healty.  So, I joined a gym, and swapped my lunchtime potato chips for celery and carrots.  I swapped afternoon candy bars for fruits, and morning trips to McDonald's with a slim-fast and oatmeal.  But I don't want to stop there.  Someone once told me that a goal is just a wish until you write it down, so that's what I'm doing.  I'm writing down my goals, and outlining my weight loss plan.  This is going to be a contract with myself, and I want to have a sense of accountability, so I'm keeping it in the blog.  So here it is:

First:
The Guidelines to a Happier, Healthier Me:
1. This isn't a diet, it's a life change.  There's a reason this is a cliche used in almost every diet book/advise column/nutritionists office: It's true.  To get the kind of lasting change I want, I can never be that girl that would eat an entire secret dinner on the way home and then another with family later.  I need to truly change my relationship with food, and this change needs to stick around for the rest of my life.  The other big thing, is that my "diet mindset" is very all or nothing.  I can't give up on these changes every time I have a slip-up or miss a visit to the gym.  I have to get back on the horse, and the only way to do that is if the positive changes are my new "way of life" instead of a temporary diet.
2. Be Positive.  This one is probably the most important to me.  In the past weight loss has always been about negatives: Foods I CAN'T eat, or exercise I HAVE to do.  Well, not anymore.  I'm focusing on the fact that I'm CAN eat whatever I want, but that I'd rather eat the foods that make me feel best.  In the past I felt like I was depriving myself of delicious food, but I'm coming around to the fact that when I eat those foods, I'm actually depriving myself of a good mood, more energy, and sense of well being.  From now on, it's not "I can't eat you" it's "I'm too good for you"  As for exercise, I'm quickly becoming addicted to the feeling I get after pushing myself for 1 more minute (or in last nights case, SEVEN MORE MINUTES!) on the elliptical when I feel like i just can't do anymore.  It's empowering.  I feel like I've accomplished something, and it's the reason I've been at the gym every single day since I joined.
3. Learn Portion Control.  I really can eat whatever I want.  I know that it's possible to do this.  The trick for me is instead of half a large pizza, eating one slice with a side of steamed broccoli.  I'm going to get better at this, and I'm going to call it "up sizing my meal" instead of restricting my calories.  Because, I get to eat more food if I eat more nutrient rich lower calorie lower fat foods as well.  While we're on the topic:  no more "good foods" or "bad foods" unless I'm talking about the flavors.  That's part of what's making my relationship with food so complicated and messy.  From now on, I eat what I want, just in smaller portions of the more "unhealthy" foods, and larger portions of fruits, veggies, salads, and lean meats.
4. Enjoy yourself.  I'm going to have fun with my weight loss.  This is not an option.  If it's not fun, it wont stick.  I'm going to be more active on a lot of fronts, and it's going to be EPIC.
5. Fell comfortable in your own skin.  This plan is NOT about a numbers goal.  There will be no goal weight, no ideal size, and no "I lost 5 pounds last week".  No poster boards filled with pictures of supermodels to give me inspiration.  This is not about fitting into a dress, looking like a magazine, or having other people consider me good looking.  My Primary goal is to be healthy and feel comfortable in my own skin.  I don't want to feel like people are glaring me down like fat is somehow contagious (even though my rational mind knows they're probably going "did i leave the stove on?") because when I have thoughts like that, it becomes clear to me, that I'm NOT comfortable in my own skin, but i really want to be.  Yes, I want to be smaller, but setting an ideal size is going to set me up for a meltdown if I don't reach it.  Plus, I don't even know what my bone structure will even allow me to become, I know for sure, I'll never be a size 2 (I'm built like a linebacker) and to be honest, I don't even WANT to be a size 2.  I just want to be happy, and I'm not at my current size, so I'm going to see what I can do to get myself to a place where I am happy, wherever that may be.

I also have certain fitness-based goals I'd like to accomplish.
1. Walk up 4 flights of stairs without getting winded.
2. Become the type of person who runs.  I've always wanted to, but I let so many things stop me.  Soon, I will set a date in the future to run a 5K, and have this set as a tangible goal... for now, I'm working on getting to a place where I run, period.
3. Meet with my trainer once a week, and look forward to it.  I have my first meeting with Maurice tomorrow night.  I think meeting with a trainer will help me be sure I'm getting the type of workout I need, and this will provide me with solid exercises to do the other 6 days of the week, and hopefully give me a good feeling of accomplishment at the end of the session.
4. Go to the gym almost every day.  I know this sounds excessive, but having this goal will keep me going more often.  it will make missing one visit seem like less of a big deal to me if i stick to it as often as I hope.  In the past missing one visit turns into giving up entirely on working out.  My ideal goal is to go every day, but this isn't always possible, taking a day off will feel like a nice treat if I've gone for the past 6 or 7 days.

More updates to come in the future on how I'm doing with maintaining the goals and guidelines I set for myself.

Today will be my first "break" day since Friday as far as going to the gym.  I'm nervous, but I'm just not sure if i have the time to get over there today, and I'm very sore.  But still there's this part of me going "well, how about we just do 10 minutes of walking, 10 on the elliptical and 10 more walking?  you'll feel so much better afterwards"  And, I think I want to foster that way of thinking, and follow through and get that positive re-enforcement of "Going to the Gym makes me feel better"

Well, now that I've written a Novel or 3, I'm going to get working.

XOXO, ladies, and as always I hope you're all having fabulous days! :D

Ugh

So, you know how I poseted about a new diet?

I'm gunna eat my left shoe in about 30 seconds.

I packed this seemingly huge lunch:

Homemade Mac n' Cheese with tomatoes, chilies, and corn
Yogurt
Sugar Free jell-o pudding snack pack
celery and peanut butter

and I even threw in an afternoon snack of apples and grapes.

I finished off the apples and graps about a half an hour ago, and now,
I feel like I never even had a lunch.

THIS IS SO FRUSTRATING.

What's more frustrating is I know why I'm like this, and there's
NOTHING I can do about it before August. I have an insullin problem,
and I've put off finding a new doctor down here, well, I finally found
one, and he's got a 5 month waiting list. So, I can't get back on my
medicines until then.

The basics of my problem by the way, is that the cells in my body
don't respond normally to insullin, and tell my pancreas that there
isn't any around, and to make more. So it does. Then I get
overloaded with insullin, and get low blood sugar, so my body signals
to my brain that I am tired and hungry. So, I eat... then, repeat.

I need to work on eating fewer carbs, because the higher the carb
count, the more severe the insullin crash... But how do I lower my
carbs, AND avoid meat? any suggestions?

Spring Break…. Or, How I learned I’m too old for this shit

For the past few weeks, I've been yearning for a Spring Break. That
week of sand, fun, and (naturally) alcohol. When my Brother came into
town this weekend with his girlfriend and their friend, they posed the
idea of spending a day in New Orleans. I suggested that we instead
get a hotel room, and spend a night.

So we did.

We got into the city around 8pm, checked in, and then started walking
over to Bourbon Street. First order of Business: Hand Grenades all
around (remember when I said I wouldn't drink one again? I lied).
After two rounds of Hand Granades, we are all feeling pretty good, and
danced away the rest of the night. Around 12, Brett and I realized,
we were too tired to go on, and left the younger half of the group to
head back to the hotel.

All day Sunday it was like a game show called "Rachel's body makes
strange noises, and she doesn't know what that pop was! Care to
guess?" I'm still feeling the effects of sugary liquor and doing the
Solja Boy Tell 'em dance.

When did I get so old? I remember going out with Amber and drinking
so much that she puked in her mom's bathtub. We woke up the next
morning feeling downright chipper. Now I wake up and go "oh shit, did
I get hit by a bus? And who turned on the fucking sun?" What
happened to me?

In other news, I'm starting to diet again. Yes, again.

Starting today. My new diet is called "Don't stop at McDonalds in the
morning, or Taco Bell at night you dummy" I looked at where my
calories are coming from, and a lot of it is that I'm in a rush in the
mornings, and stop for an egg and cheese biscuit, then I don't eat a
big enough lunch, get hungry at work, and get Taco Bell on the way
home, but then still eat a dinner once I get home. It's too many
extra calories, and I don't need em.

Well, I suppose I should get to work. The plant isn't going to engineer itself.

So, I got pretty busy at work the past two weeks, but now that I've finished all of those tasks, I'm back to twiddling my thumbs, waiting for my next assignment.

1 hour into the work day and I'm already bored.

At least though, it's my Friday, and I have so many exciting things to look forward to this weekend:

1) I'm going to New Orleans for the night tonight, and get to spend the day down there with my cousin Rose tomorrow.

2) My cousin Rose is in town!

3) My Aunt Stacy (Rose's mom, my mom's sister) is going to come into town on Saturday, and we're gunna have a little get together.

Now, though, I need to start getting amped up for Aunt Stacy being in town. I love her, I really do, but OH MY WORD the woman knows how to push my buttons. She's very good at telling me exactly what problem areas my clothes don't help (and, seriously, she's been a size 2 her whole life, so I doubt she can really help me with my problem areas). And she talks to me about my mom's recent 75 pound weight loss like I'm a failure. My mom and I went on Jenny Craig together back in July. I lost 10 pounds, which is 10 pounds less than were I was, but in the same amount of time my mom lost 45. I was incredibly strict, and ate the food, exercised and didn't add anything to the menu. My mom cheated almost every day. The fact of the matter is that, it is harder for me to loose weight than it is for other people. I'm not trying to make excuses for myself, it's just going to take me a lot longer to get there, and I'm okay with that. But I need to prepare for a week of condescending tones and phrases like "you're too pretty to carry around that weight" and "doesn't your mom look so good now?" I know she means well, and that she wants for me to loose the weight for my own well being, but… I just don't it rubbed in my face by my own family members, because, in all honesty, I get it enough from strangers as it is.

So, I'm going to spend the weekend, boosting my self esteem, so that when she get's here she can take it right back to a healthy level.

That new diet I talked about...

So, I haven't mentioned my "new diet" in a while, and that's because it sucked, and I gave up on it.
I know that I can't make a zillion changes at once, so why do I keep thinking it will work? My new plan, is to gradually change one thing about my diet every couple of weeks, and before i know it, I'll be living healthily, and loving it instead of going "But, I want KING CAKE" (Speaking of King Cake, I had a piece of Zulu King Cake at lunch, and nearly peed my pants it was so good). I'm going with the "anything in moderation" method, but truly using my brain when it comes to moderation.I just need to remind myself that moderate ice cream amounts are "half a scoop" and not "half a bowl" and eat healthier things in larger quantities (veggies, whole grains, more veggies) to teach myself that healthy foods are more filling. I think that this will work out better in the end, I never did well with meal plans anyway, and it should help me change my whole lifestyle in the process.
Also, gym membership. I hate to say it, but it's time, I'ma get a membership and work my ass off til it's at least 4 sizes smaller. Honestly, I'd like to start running. I know this is weird, considering I've always hated running, but the past few months, I've been thinking it couldn't hurt to try to get myself worked up to a program. So, hopefully, by this time next year, i can go outside and have a run (or possibly at that point still a "light jog", let's face it, I'm really out of shape, and it takes a while to get up to running) and not have to worry about gym memberships.
This is my solid plan.
Also, I'm back at work today. boo.
Well, My new diet is interesting thus far.
Today for lunch i had brown rice with chickpeas and spinach, and i learned, that... if I'm ever constipated, eat brown rice with chickpeas and spinach.
Also, I have accomplished next to nothing so far at work today.
i should go outside and walk down some lines, but I'm not sure if i'm done with the bathroom.
Gross, I know, but... eh, I don't care.
